21-1.    There are many different types of popular entertainment. The most successful of these are usually very simple. Karaoke is a perfect example of this type of success story.

Karaoke is a Japanese word which translates as ‘empty orchestra’. The idea is that the music of a song is played without the words. People read these from a screen and sing along to the music. The result may not always be of great musical quality. It is, however, usually great fun.

The idea of singing along to background music has been around for as long as people have made music. Karaoke has basically developed a tradition which already existed. What it has done is to record both music and words and let people put them together.

We don’t usually know who first had the idea for any type of popular entertainment. These things seem to develop by themselves. With Karaoke, however, this is not the case. In fact, it is generally accepted that the idea for Karaoke belongs to someone named Daisuke Inoue. Unfortunately, he never registered the name officially and missed the chance to make a lot of money. He did win an award for ‘a new way for people to tolerate each other.’ If Karaoke has done this, it is truly priceless.

(1)Karaoke is the only type of successful popular entertainment.

(2)Karaoke is a Korean word and means ‘empty orchestra’.

Similarly, she has been heavily involved with the American Association of Distance Education and was that Association's President during 2008-11. She has also held a number of leadership roles in the Commission on Lifelong Education of America, one of the most important organizations in adult education.

21-3.  Learning to drive isn’t as simple as people think. First, you need a good teacher. It’s better to have lessons from a qualified driving instructor. These lessons are expensive, however, but it is worth the money.

Proper instructors have special cars, with extra mirrors and special controls, such as an extra brake pedal. They can use this if you have problems and stop the car themselves. This gives you confidence when you’re learning.  As well as worrying about how to use all the controls, looking in the mirrors and deciding where you’re going, you have to work out what other drivers are doing. That’s why it’s better to learn to drive in the countryside on quiet roads rather than busy roads in town centers.

You shouldn’t spend too long on your first lessons, as there’s a lot to remember. It’s better to start with two or three one-hour lessons a week, then have one two-hour lesson a week after that.

Of course, you also need to get as much extra practice as possible. Ask patient people to help you though. Then you need to decide on the route before you set off. It’s also a good idea to discuss what you want to practise each time. Make it clear you don’t want any surprises. Concentrate on one thing at a time and you’ll quickly become a confident driver.

(1)Lessons from a qualified driving instructor are usually cheap.

(2)It’s better to learn to drive in town centers.

(3)Proper instructors can stop the car themselves when you have problems.

(4)You shouldn’t spend too much time on your first lessons.

(5)It is better to practice as many as things each time when you learn to drive.

22-1.I used to think education was the most important thing in my life. Recently my attitude has begun to change, although I still hold that it is essential for everyone in the world today. As a top junior student in my college, I was asked to make a speech on how to learn English well. Standing in front of the audience facing so many freshmen, I was trembling. I didn’t remember any word that I had prepared. I ran out of the conference room without finishing my speech, leaving everyone puzzled. I cried that night in my room, feeling that I was a loser. Studying takes so much of my time that I feel unable to really develop myself. I am just storing knowledge; yet fail to communicate with others. I have received many awards in school, but they don’t necessarily reflect anything about me. I don’t know how to socialize. When I leave school I fear I will be of no use to society.

I realize that everyone has her or his own way of living. I want to change my lifestyle. Of course I will keep studying. Yet I plan to look for a part-time job, which might turn out to be a good chance to get to know society. I still believe that working my hardest does make me happy. I will still stay on in college, but I will not allow it to shelter me from the real world.

(2)The author thinks the awards she has received______.

22-2.Ten workers in China pushed their boss’s car three miles home after an office party because they were all too drunk to drive. The group was enjoying a meal at a restaurant in downtown Changchun, Jilin Province (northeast China). When the party was over, Boss Zhang Fei found that he was too drunk to drive. Then suddenly they realized nobody had stayed sober enough to drive his car.

Drink-driving was listed as a dangerous offence in China in 2014, esp. when the driver is drunk. Those who break the law will have their driving license revoked, face a heavy fine and may be put in jail. Zhang did not want to leave his car downtown and it was too late to call out another driver to drive the car for him. Someone then suggested they push the car home, and said that the exercise would do them all good. Thus, all ten quickly agreed and set off with Zhang at the wheel. All ten workers pushed their boss’s car home through the city streets, laughing and singing during the 45-minute journey. Passers-by were shocked to see the group.

Traffic officers said that as long as the car’s engine was not running, it would not be classed as drink-driving under the law. However, it is still very dangerous for so many people to push the car along the road, as it may cause traffic accidents.

The schools and the police took it seriously. The schools wrote a letter to parents immediately, informing them of the case and making safety suggestions. Police are looking into the matter.

Police responded to the case as soon as they received the report. “It’s a matter of public safety,” said the police spokesperson. “We want to make sure everybody, including kids, adults and people out and about are safe. So, we take this very seriously.”

Police were making some safety suggestions for the students. Police asked students to always be on their guard when walking to school. 22-4.In the past, American families tended to be quite large. Parents raising five or more children were common. Over the years, the size of the family is becoming smaller. One reason for this is an increase in the cost of living.

Generally children attend schools for more years than they used to, making them financially dependent on their families longer. Moreover, children nowadays are better dressed and have more money to spend on entertainment. The parents are usually responsible for all the expenses. And families are less close than they used to be. More and more American mothers work away from home. The break-up of the family appears when the parents divorce. A lot of children in the U. S. live part of their young lives with only one parent. Children grow up feeling unsettled as they are moved between their parents. Single parents often marry other single parents. In this type of family, unrelated children are forced to develop brother or sister relationship.
